ThermoPro TP20 Review

Date Reviewed: January 1, 2024

If you’re looking for a reasonable wireless meat thermometer, the Thermopro TP20 may be what you’re looking for!

Overall, it’s hard to find a lot wrong with the ThermoPro TP20, and at this price point, it’s a solid addition to your grilling arsenal. Setting up the unit is a breeze, and the preset meat temps make grilling and smoking easy. My tests worked very well with my pellet grill, even with temperatures up to 500°, but the wires can withstand up to 716°.

I found the thermometer to be very durable overall, but learning how to control the unit takes some getting used to. I prefer the fully wireless Bluetooth MEATER Plus, but it’s also more expensive.

Again, you can’t go wrong with the ThermoPro TP20 for under $50. However, you will want a storage solution like this $16 case.

ThermoPro TP20

This is an Amazon #1 Best Seller product with a 4.6/5 rating, so you can buy with confidence.

  • Hands-free monitoring is reliable up to 300 ft.
  • 9 programmed internal meat temperatures with five doneness options
  • Great price and value, overall
  • Durable in various weather conditions (mine was rained on and still works!)

  • Not completely wireless like some modern thermometers
  • No button lock on the receiver (consider this if you have kids, haha)
  • Some customers have experienced bad probs (but ThermoPro will replace these, just ask)

Price & Value

  • 90% 90%

All things considered, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better-priced wireless grill thermometer that packs the features of the TP20. This is why I give it a 95/100 score on price—it’s simply hard to beat in this range.

There are more expensive options on the market with more features, and of course, less expensive options as well, but be careful you don’t trade quality and durability to save a few bucks. Keep in mind that you’re buying something you’ll be using and depending on often—dependability trumps saving a few bucks any day of the week!

Build Quality

  • Durability 85% 85%

Construction & Material

When you open the ThermoPro TP20, it’s easy to tell that it was built to last. The probes and probe wires feel strong and durable, the receiver buttons are large and tight, and the LCD displays utilize basic technology that will last for years to come.

Now, this wasn’t purposely part of my test but after leaving the units outside in the rain, I quickly learned that these units withstand weather conditions really well. After enjoying a tasty pork butt, I realized what I had done and quickly ran out to ensure the TP20 still worked—it did and I remain impressed.

I’m not suggesting you leave your TP20 rain, sleet, and snow, but it’s nice to know that it’ll apparently hold up if something like that happens. This unit is not water proof and exposure to large amounts of water will ruin the device.

The Two Probes

If you read reviews as I do, you’ll find that the TP20 has a 4.6 out of 5-star rating on Amazon and is an Amazon Choice product (at the time of this review)—pretty impressive. In those reviews, you’ll find that there are a few customers who have experienced faulty probes that led to a bad experience. With that said, you’ll also notice that ThermoPro stands behind their product and will send brand-new probes if needed, you just need to ask for it.

I will tell you, in all my tests, I never had any issues with the probes that came with my unit and I found them to be very accurate.

  • Size & Shape 95% 95%
  • Functionality 95% 95%
  • Portability & Storage 20% 20%

While I’m not totally in love with the design of the TheromoPro TP20, its simple design is kind of the overall point in this case. If you’re looking for an affordable, high-quality food thermometer, then the fact that the design of the TP20 is nothing super special is not really a huge consideration.

Size & Shape

The ThermoPro TP20 is a good size, allowing for a decently sized screen, buttons, and readings. One feature I like about this meat thermometer is that both units have a nice metal stand on the back where you can prop it up for easy viewing

Very Functional

I really like a few things about the design that make this a very functional device.

  • Both the receiver and transmitter are wrapped in thick rubber, making drops less of a potential issue.
  • The bright orange rubber makes it easy to find.
  • The display font size is large and very easy to read.
  • The buttons are large for my fat fingers.
  • Both devices are small and easy to store, although the probe wires can be troublesome. Do yourself a favor and buy this case for improved organization.

Portability & Storage

As mentioned directly above, portability is one weakness with the TP20 because they do not come with a default cause to the store or carry them in once you open them. You can easily fix this by buying a $16 case making the portability and storage incredible.

  • Setup & Syncing 100% 100%
  • Cleaning 95% 95%
  • Cooking/Smoking 95% 95%
  • Wireless Control 80% 80%

Effortless Syncing

Setting up and syncing the devices is seriously effortless—simply put the batteries in, and they sync together automatically.

Getting the two probes clean is easy and doesn’t require much work—it’s what you would expect. One downfall of the TP20 is that the probes have wires and are not fully wireless, so you are cleaning the probe itself and keeping the long-wired cables clean as well.

Handwashing is just fine; you probably don’t want to put these in the dishwasher.

Present USDA Approved Meat Temps

The TP20 has nine programmed preset internal meat temps that the USDA sets. In addition to those presets, you have five doneness options (rare, med rare, medium, med well, and well done) built right in. Here are the meat temps built-in: Ground Beef, Ground Poultry, Beef, Veal, Chicken, Pork, Poultry, Lamb, and Fish.

So that you know, you can override these settings and add your own if desired.

Monitor 300ft Away

You heard that right; the units talk to each other effortlessly as long as they are within 300 feet of each other. The downfall with the TP20 is that it is not a fully wireless system, nor can it be synced with your phone or controlled wirelessly.
